Empire United Buffalo Coach Mike Ertel, 2016 USYSA Region 1 Boys Competitive Coach of the Year

Empire United Soccer Academy’s own Mike Ertel has been recognized by United States Youth Soccer Region 1 as its Boys Competitive Coach of the Year.   Mike coaches with Empire United Buffalo.

The Competitive Coach of the Year is awarded to a competitive coach for both a boys’ team and a girls’ team for his or her coaching activities, sportsmanship, player development, personal coaching development and citizenship. The national Boys and Girls Competitive Coaches of the Year is announced at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, as a part of the US Youth Soccer Workshop.

Player Development - Mike takes the time to coach the team as a whole and each player individually.  In fact, central to his coaching philosophy is the core belief that developing the individual improves the whole. He has demonstrated success as a coach through earning players respect by calmly and patiently explaining drills, objectives and expectations.  And whenever one or more of the players regress, his corrective reaction is both proportionate and appropriate.

Sportsmanship - Mike gives great effort to develop mature teenagers and responsible citizens through the lessons of teamwork and Fair Play.  He reminds players that often things are not fair and that sometimes you will face adversity, but it’s the way in which you react that will determine the person you become.

Personal Coaching Development - In an effort to better himself as a coach and mentor, Mike researched methodology supporting youth development.  He studied several world-famous educators whose works and research are extensively sited by experts involved with education, cognition and brain physiology. Mike reinforces important principles of educational development to subtly encourage parents to be active in the betterment of their children.

Involvement in the community – Besides being a Head coach for Empire United Soccer Academy and the men’s head coach of Villa Maria College, Mike is dedicated to helping those around him.  Whether it is volunteering to help at charity events, coaching local Grand Island kids, and training soccer players (for free) for participation in National events (several years ago he coached a local team that became Disney 3v3 National Champions) – Mike is there.

The national Boys and Girls Competitive Coaches of the Year are announced at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, as a part of the US Youth Soccer Workshop.

We wish Mike good luck as he represents Empire United, NYSW and Region 1 in that announcement!
